A continuation of the episode 081 topic of ensuring justice. We talk about the Presidentâs Task Force on Violent Crimeâs recommendations for making sure the legal system doesnât re-victimize or further victimize the person who was the target of crime. Although this episode is a bit on the dull side, the issues discussed are important should you ever find yourself in the legal aftermath of a violent crime. Since we felt like this episode dragged a bit, we will leave it up to our listeners if you want us to continue to talk about this topic in future episodes. It might be better if those who are interested look at the public report themselves. Weâll try and spice up the topic next time guys! Until then, let us know what you think by contacting us!

Layered self-defense and VITAL Self-Defenseâs Prevail Over Violence Model is the topic for this 82nd episode of the Self-Defense Show. Charles gives a birdâs eye view of the whole of our approach to accounting for violence in an ordinary personâs life. He talks about the 30 layers of a comprehensive self-defense education. There are 10 layers before the violence, 10 layers that apply during the violent incident, and 10 aftermath layers. This is a general overview of the philosophical and/or theoretical framework VITAL Self-Defense employs to educate people in personal protection. We hope this brings some structure and context to the various topics we discuss on the show. We have covered many of the 30 topics in much greater detail in previous episodes. This is not meant to be an in-depth description, but merely a table of contents so to speak. Please let us know if you feel we have missed a topic, or are off-base in any way. We love hearing from our listeners.

After surviving, your legal battle begins. We talk about victim law in the US justice system and how it has changed over the past 25 years. We used the 1983 Presidentâs Task Force on the Victims of Crime as our guide to discuss some of the way the Criminalâs Justice System can further violate a victim of crime. Although there have been great improvements to the laws and procedures we discuss in this episode, we still have a long way to go. Knowing where we have come from, and what rights we were lacking 25 years ago will help us be stronger in our legal self-defense. If you think that your struggles are over once that thug hits the deck via your awesome punch, your in store for a rude awakening. The next 12 to 24 months of your life could be 10x worse than the actual incident itself. We are sure to come back to this subject and have multiple parts because this topic is way too huge to cover in one show alone. Make sure you tell us your story. We love hearing from our listeners!

Charles in on National Public Radio! KVPR Valley Public Radio, an NPR affiliate in central California asked Charles to be an expert and answer callers questions on a show called Quality of Life. This weekâs topic is on, you guessed it, self-defense. Our good friend Kelly Rudolph from SURVIVE! Self-Defense was kind enough to hook Charles up with this media opportunity. Kelly is in the radio studio and Charles is on the phone during this hour long program. When Charles was asked if he would make this appearance, he agreed so long as he could then podcast it as an episode of the Self-Defense Show. The producer agreed, and here it is! Please drop a thank you email to Kelly from SURVIVE! for making this all happen. Visit her site at either www.SurviveSD.com or www.SafetyQuickTips.com and let her know what you thought. Thanks for being loyal listeners!

F.O.R.C.E.d is another acronym tactic for you to know what is generally considered to be justified self-defense in the eyes of the law. Although there are thousands of specific laws that vary from place to place, these 5 commonalities hold true with most of them. Be sure and research the self-defense laws in your city / state / country / county. This is a shorter episode because Christie is on vacation and itâs just Charles talking. To spare you from having to listen to him blabber on, we have cut the length of this episode in half. In our next episode, 080, Charles will be on National Public Radio along with Kelly Rudolph from SURVIVE! Self-Defense. Be sure and check that one out! Please give us a review on iTunes (itâs the listing with the red shield... NOT the one with our picture). Thanks so much.

Self-Defense Show 078

Interview with Dan Millman, author of the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, as well as 12 other books. His philosophies on life and purpose are very interesting and thought provoking. Although part of this interview is not directly related to self-defense, we believe it is still beneficial to listen to. After all, no self-defense will work unless you have a foundation of self-worth, self-confidence, and a feeling that you are worth protecting. Additionally, having a strong sense of purpose in your life will give you something to fight for. We also talk about the FAST Combatives training that Dan, Christie, and myself attended a few weekends ago. Hollywood produced a major motion picture based off of Danâs first book. Itâs on DVD now so you can check it out for yourself. Itâs entitled Peaceful Warrior and is directed by the same guy who directed Powder. We are sure happy Dan agreed to do an interview with us, and we hope you guys as listeners will drop him a thank you as well. Be sure to visit his website http://www.peacefulwarrior.com

We interview Dr. Steven J. Pearlman, author of The Book of Martial Power. We discuss the principals at the heart of every martial arts style. We also talk about how these martial principals can help ordinary people against violent crime. Another interesting topic discussed was why and how martial arts has become less pragmatic over the centuries in regards to its original war applications. Dr. Pearlman offers a very unique and wise opinions that serve to expand our understanding. Although this episode dives into the technicalities of physical responses, and is a bit more martial arts heavy then what we normally go into, we believe understanding what Dr. Pearlman teaches can be very beneficial to a martial arts practitioner who wishes to enhance their fundamental knowledge. Our thanks to Dr. Pearlman for spending his valuable time and wisdom with us. Please visit him at his website www.SingleStepProductions.com or email him at StevenPearlman@gmail.com

We review the book "Lucky" by Alice Sebold. Except for one explicit yet non-gratuitous quote from the book, the language in this episode is clean. The main part of the show is a bit shorter then normal just because we were pressed for time. However, there is some good bonus "recorded in the car" stuff after the ending music to fill out the hour. In the book, Alice Sebold tells her story of how she was raped and all the repercussion of that violent act on her life. This is an extremely well done book that allows people who have never been sexually assaulted to understand a little bit better what it is like. We really hope all women, but especially all men read this gripping, yet ultimately inspiring true story of a strong women who survived a rape to become a stronger women. After the ending music we have some bonus material for you. I talk about some questions that were recently asked to me by a person who has a stalker. I give some basic advice that serves as a incomplete introduction to some stalking topics.

More information about stalking and how to get help can be found at
http://www.ncvc.org/src/
or call toll free 1-800-FYI-CALL
or email gethelp@ncvc.org

At last! Talk of physical resistance (offensive) techniques!!! I know you all out there have been waiting for it. Now, here it is. After 68 previous episodes on all kinds of other violence protection issues, I feel there is finally enough in the can to go ahead and talk about this over emphasized subject. Now it's in the correct proportion to the other topics covered. 1/69th of effective self-defense is physical offense techniques! LOL Well, sort of. Anyway, Charles is alone on this episode so brace yourselves for a lecture way over an hour again. Charles reviews 12 physical tactics that can be used to cause emergency room level injuries to your assailant in order for you to escape or to stop the threat. This episode goes very well with episode 024 in which we discuss Non-Combative Techniques, and episode 042 where we talk about defensive / protective techniques. With the 024, 042, 069 episode combo, you should have generally all the techniques you will ever need... besides specialized scenarios. So there you go all you technique fanatics out there. Sorry, but in the scope of violence response training, physical techniques aren't that big in the picture. And remember, your fighting spirit and righteous rage will determine about 60 to 70% of how effective your physical fighting back response will be. only about a third of your physical response success is based on your knowledge and mastery of particular physical techniques. Let me know what you think guys!
